Murdock Nebraska News - June 16, 2021

Welcome to Murdock

Area News     School News     Church News      Cass County News    SUBMIT News

This week I realized how spoiled I am to my desktop computer and the way I "normally" do things. My power supply on my PC died after five years of HEAVY all day use. So this weeks newletter was compiled at the Elmwood Library WITHOUT my bookmarks and shortcuts. Then it was finished on my son's laptop, which has a much smaller screen than my 24" desktop screen.

It's amazing what we take for granted. I apologize if I missed anything or didn't get a PDF linked. This will be fixed and updated next week.

Murdock 4th of July

4th of July schedule1

Yes!! We are back to "normal" and Murdock will be having their 4th of July celebration. This is just the START of all the events that will take place on the 4th of July.

Check your mail for the official EMMA Newsletter full of information about area activities and business information.

Glimpse into Murdock History

Continuing with our new series to the weekly news.

This week is a repeat of last as my computer "died" and I can't access my historical files. It will resume next week

During the 1950s Pastor Heim would document his home visits with parishioners by taking a photo. These are no ordinary photos, but COLOR photographs. In the 1950s this was almost unheard of then. It was cutting-edge "technology". Thank you to Ramona Oehlerking for the video/images.

Many people have commented to me that Pastor Heim probably wasn't responsible for all these photos. Seems Ed Niemeyer (from the previous photo series) also took photos during this era. The photos were given to Maxine Cline.

In talking to Ramona and Angie we have come to the conclusion that this was the Methodist Church Summer Bible School family picnic at the end of the two-week session. Ramona remembers teaching for two weeks.

Church Youth activities

Angie also remembers the end of the school year family picnics with 3 legged races and other activities. That would be fun to bring back. I think in later years those types of fun races are called "field day" when the kids get outside have fun activities and eat lunch outside.

I remember having field day growing up and my kids did the same at Elmwood-Murdock in elementary school.

Notice the ladies in dresses having a picnic?

I wonder if people will look back forty years from now on our photos of Memorial Day and the 4th of July on the website with such fond memories.

This is one reason why this website is so valuable. All of the news is searchable at the top. Try it. Type in fire department, lions club, 4th of July, see that you find.

Every week I am getting emails at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. from people who are enjoying the photos. Thank you for reading and sharing with others. It's nice to know I'm not just "talking to the wind."

Remember, reader-submitted photos like this are a reason why the newsletter is interesting. You can send your Murdock photos of events, friends, and family to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Tails and Tales (Summer Reading Program)

Lions and tigers and bears and . . . KIDS! The Elmwood Public Library will be hosting the Summer Reading Clubs during the month of June and this year’s theme is “Tails and Tales” (animal literature)!

The clubs will meet on Thursdays during the month of June (3, 10, 17 & 24). Little ones aged 4-7 will meet at 10:30 am. Older kids ages 8-11 will meet at 1 pm. Each session will last approximately one hour. Parental supervision is not required, as we will have some volunteer coordinators on-site to help.

Library summer reading program

We have a lot of fun things in store including presentations and live animals on-site! We’ll also get our hands dirty with some crafts and kick back with some animal crackers and watch a cartoon or two! Between all of these fun activities, we’ll discover some great animal stories and integrate them into the weekly activities. Earn tickets towards prizes by reading books and attending our meetings. Prizes will be awarded on June 24.

Advanced registration is required. Please stop by the library prior to May 31 to fill out a registration sheet and reserve a spot for your child(ren). Elmwood Farmers Market News

Bike Share in Elmwood Nebraska

What is the bike-share program? Quite simply there are five bikes available for the public to use for FREE! Yes, you heard it. Just drop into Bits and Pieces and sign one out!

In coordination with St Paul Methodist Church, United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas, and Bits & Pieces five bicycles are available to check out (just like a library book) and ride around town, to the park, or on the trail.

  • To check out a bike, you must sign a waiver. General bike share program rules-
must show a drivers license at check out
  • 12-17 can rent bikes with a parent at check out. Parents take full responsibility and sign a waiver for their child.
  • The bike is due back by the next Bits and Pieces business day. Plans are in the works to get a key dropbox. (Stay tuned.)
  • The condition of the bike is checked at check out and when it is checked back in
when you check out a bike you are responsible for the bike. Any damage will result in a fee.
failure to return the bike by the due date will result in the suspension of your ability to check out bikes.
  • No holds/reservations on bikes will be allowed
  • We do not provide helmets. You can bring your own helmet to use while riding the bike.
  • Have fun!!!!

Funding for this project was provided in part by the United Methodist Health Fund, Hutchinson, Kansas.💗 About 30 people attended the official ribbon cutting on April 12th and I was even the first person to check out a bike. It's easy and once you are registered you just add the next date and time to the notebook.
