First Day of Harvest

Thank you, Gretchen, for the picture of Randy on his "First Day of Harvest photo". Their little girl started kindergarten this year and held a sign so she wanted her Daddy to do the same. It's actually a "thing" on social media now, so check it out.
Was your first day of harvest this week?

You may not be a farmer, but you know one and harvest is the season they look forward to all year. It can also be the most dangerous time of the year with early mornings starting before the sun rises and late nights in the field.
Combines and tractors are out on the country roads so PLEASE be careful. They are wide and cannot move over to the ditches as quickly. PLEASE tell your kids to be careful and drive slow when going over the hills. Look ahead over the next hill and ridge.

Watch for "alien lights" on the highways, flashing lights usually means a "lead pickup" is escorting a large piece of equipment. I will be sharing photos of harvest in the coming weeks, feel free to share your own by sending them to
WATCH the HUSKER Game at Bulldogs

Don't get the Nebraska Husker game at home? Head over to Bulldogs where they have shot specials during touchdowns, and some of the best chicken wings around.

Seriously. They are that good.
They even have a new Tropical Habanero flavor that is sure to get your lips smacking. No need to go into Omaha or Lincoln for the game, stay local and support our local businesses.
Find them on Facebook for daily specials.
Getting ready for the Annual AppleJack Parade.
Yes, It's time for the Apple Jack Festival in Nebraska City and the Elmwood Murdock band always competes for bragging rights in the marching band competition.

If you live in Murdock you can probably hear them practicing as they march down the streets during the first period. Oh, how I miss my kids in marching band. It was one of my best memories of their school experience. Yes, I was THAT band Mom.
(Thanks Beth P for the photo submission)
If you have photos of AppleJack this year please send them to

West Nile Warning
Two local Elmwood residents have been hospitalized recently for West Nile.
This is no joke!
Mosquitoes are out and it's important to use insect repellent. Symptoms include a high fever, a very severe headache, and stiffness. It may feel like a very bad flu, but WORSE. Both people were in the hospital for a week, so it is a major illness. It can cause encephalitis or meningitis.
One person I spoke to it's something he never wants again and he is still feeling very weak.

Big Tobacco has a long history of marketing it's deadly products to youth through manipulation and deception, and we've seen it all and had enough of it! As youth, we have the power to change the social norm created by Big Tobacco and celebrate our collaborative achievements. Awareness and unification are keys to our success in the past and moving forward.
