Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute

NAYI is Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute. It is a weeklong experience for high school juniors and seniors from all across Nebraska to learn about career opportunities in agriculture.
It features speakers, workshops, ag education and networking with peers and industry leaders. NAYI took place at the UNL campus July 9-12. Students interested in becoming delegates must answer questions and write essays. Delegates are selected based on their leadership skills and interest and involvement in agriculture. This year had 213 delegates.

Kate Zakaras, a soon to be senior at Elmwood-Murdock was one of the few Cass County Delegates for NAYI 2018. She was joined by Jacob Drake from Conestoga, Charlie Knust from Plattsmouth, and Sophia Svanda from Nehawka. These students all have been active in 4H or FFA for years. Matthew Morton from Nehawka served on the NAYC and helped organize NAYI.
Kate is a 3-year member of Palmyra FFA and is currently serving as Vice President. She has shown market goats through FFA at the Otoe County Fair the last 2 years. She has been an active member of the Cass County Creative Cats 4H club for 8 years. She is currently serving as the Club President. Kate shows meat goats, dairy goats, and other goats. She is a member of the 4H council and competed in the State Livestock and Poultry Judging Contests.
Kate says "NAYI was a great experience that showcased many ways agriculture impacts our lives and the many different career choices it holds. We had many interesting discussions and fun activities that made it a week I will never forget."

NEW ELMWOOD-MURDOCK SCHOOL WEBSITE
There is a wealth of information on the new Elmwood-Murdock website. It is updated on a daily basis by various teachers and department heads.
It’s out with the old and in with the new at Murdock, Nebraska.
MURDOCK PRIDE is out…gone…deleted but in with the new…MURDOCK IMPROVEMENT TEAM or M.I.T. for short.
This is the replacement name but with the same mission statement to inspire others to volunteer time/ talent/ support of projects which improve the community of Murdock.
Our goal is to provide smiles to those who live here or who pass through downtown Murdock through a variety of events. It is hoped that all past events like the scarecrows, Christmas in Murdock decorations, spring flowers, etc. will continue.
There is great enthusiasm among the young adults in the community who have volunteered with the town clean-up prior to the 4th of July celebrations. Keep tuned for upcoming great opportunities for Murdock with this kind of spirit in action.
Thank-you and much appreciation to all who helped and continue to help in big ways and in little ways.
Mark Saturday, August 25th on your calendar for a BIG CLEAN-UP DAY with an opportunity for you to get your clutter to the dumpsters which will be in town.
Watch for more details!

Can a Splash Pad at the Murdock Park be in the Future?
What do you think? The idea has been tossed out there.
The MURDOCK PRIDE group is now looking into the possibility.
There is funding assistance. The Murdock ballpark brings thousands of people each summer for ball games and this would be a fantastic way to improve our town.
GREAT IDEA for a Future MURDOCK PLAYGROUND!
It's been many many years since the playground set was built by the school. Over 25 years actually. There is grant money to build new parks in our communities.
Who thinks this would be a fit?
LINCOLN, Neb. — Grant money is available for recreation facilities hoping to add things like ballfields, splash pads and picnicking areas across Nebraska.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is accepting grant applications for parks and other outdoor recreation facilities and amenities promoting outdoor recreation.
The grants are funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program administered by the National Park Service for outdoor recreation projects. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, ballfields, soccer fields, swimming pools, picnicking facilities, playgrounds, pool renovations, splash pads, park acquisitions and development, and park-related support facilities.
All projects must encourage outdoor recreation. Project sponsors must be a political subdivision, such as cities, county governments or Natural Resource Districts. The LWCF provides reimbursable matching grants for up to 50 percent of the project costs.
The LWCF was established by Congress in 1964 to ensure access to outdoor recreation resources for present and future generations and to provide money to governments to purchase land, water, and wetlands to benefit all. The primary source of revenue for the LWCF is from federal oil and gas leases on the Outer Continental Shelf.
Grant applications must be submitted by Sept. 7, 2018. Information and application materials are available at outdoornebraska.gov/lwcf.
Approved grants will be announced after the January Commission meeting. Contact Schuyler Sampson at 402-471-5283 or
