Welcome to a new section of the Elmwood and Murdock weekly news. Senator Rob Clements will be submitting a regular summary of what is happening in the Nebraska Unicameral.  If you ever wanted to know how Nebraska is run, how decisions are made he is the one to ask.

16th Annual Short Story Contest

Deadline for the  16th Annual Bess Streeter Aldrich short story contest is next Friday!

The goal is to generate a fictional short story that is written in the wholesome spirit displayed by Bess Streeter Aldrich in her works while incorporating a theme that focuses on Nebraska’s economy, history, cultural diversity, and/or geography (past, present, and/or future).

Writers are encouraged to focus on historical and/or realistic topics. This year the Aldrich Foundation is paying tribute to Mrs. Aldrich’s novel The Rim of the Prairie and believe it would be an excellent resource.

Eligibility (Four divisions):

Adult: 1st Prize $100; 2nd Prize $50; 3rd Prize $25
High School (Grades 9-12): 1st Prize $50; 2nd Prize $25; 3rd Prize $15
Middle School (Grades 6-8): 1st Prize $50; 2nd Prize $25; 3rd Prize $15
Intermediate School (Grades 3-5): 1st Prize $25; 2nd Prize $15; 3rd Prize $10

Mahoney State Park Activities

Looking for something to do with the kids during the winter. We have a wonderful "playground" right in our own backyard with Mahoney state park offering ice skating, ice fishing, and indoor birthday parties at the playground. So if your kids are getting cabin fever let them run off some energy in the ball pits and climbing wall and not your furniture.

No Tobacco Challenge Artwork Winner Announced

 (Papillion, NE) – Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands (T.E.A.M.), Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition (MOTAC), and Nebraska Methodist Health Systems invited over 1,500 third grade classrooms to participate in the “No Tobacco Challenge”. The challenge is a proactive, fun, and simple gateway to engaging students in Cass, Douglas, & Sarpy Counties in discussing the dangers of tobacco, and the importance of making health-conscious choices for our bodies. As part of the challenge, students were able to submit artwork to be featured on local billboards. The Grand Prize Winner's art was selected from a pool of finalists, selected on the basis of creativity, neatness, originality, and effectiveness at promoting the message of living tobacco free.

The Grand Prize Winner of the Artwork Contest, Lily Bock, from Thomas Elementary in Gretna, was presented with a banner of her design by T.E.A.M. Sarpy Coordinator Autumn Sky Burns and Gretna City Councilwoman Angie Lauritsen.  Her artwork will be featured on two billboards, 84^th & L in Omaha and Hwy 50 in Springfield.  Lily’s winning entry also won her a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card, with a $50 one for her class. 

All classrooms that participated were entered in a random drawing for a $200 Barnes and Noble Gift Certificate and a classroom pizza party, Druid Hill Elementary was this year’s lucky recipient.

T.E.A.M. is a community coalition of more than forty local organizations that works to create healthy, tobacco-free areas for our community to enjoy.  They meet on the 4^th Thursday of the month at 11:30pm at CHI Health Midlands (11111 S. 84^th St, Papillion) in the Smith Suite.
