Murdock Nebraska News
Officially Fall!
It's officially fall! How do I know? Homecoming is over, the leaves are starting to change on the trees, and the scarecrows are showing up downtown.
So what are you doing this fall? It doesn't need to be exciting, you may even think it's boring. But people reading this all over the country want to hear and see what's going on in their hometown.
- So what are you doing this fall?
- Who is selling or growing pumpkins?
- Anyone selling turkeys this year?
- Who is it that started decorating Main Street?
- What is your church doing, your club or organization?
Send me the news and I'll put it in the newsletter.
So don't send me the following...I know some of these events are taking place.
- Town Board Announcements
- Lions Club Activities
- Photos from the park (pick up games, activities, etc)
- Boy Scout & Girl Scout meetings
- Church News & Announcements
- Did You Know? (Did you know this or that about here or there in town)
Your help is not only greatly appreciated but NEEDED. Please send any articles, updates, photos etc to me by Sunday at 4PM via email at
Annual Market to Market Relay Race
What a day of excitement!
Did you see the added traffic in town? Did you see runners?
The exciting Market to Market Relay Race was this past Saturday week and the youth group of Trinity Lutheran Church participated by volunteering and using this as a fundraiser.
Murdock gets recognition across the country by hosting events like this and it is a great opportunity.
Area clubs and groups earned $500 for volunteering to assist, direct traffic and answer questions. The Trinity Lutheran Youth Group helped with the exchange at 310th and Mynard Rd. I was one of those volunteers.
Here is what I learned.
Almost 700 teams of 8 runners ran from Lincoln and race to Omaha.
There were 19 stations in the 76 miles between Omaha's Arksarben Village and the Lincoln Haymarket. A runner would take one of the "legs" and run to the next exchange station where their team mates in vans had drove ahead of them.

Each team registered with their official 5K times and the slower teams started at 5am and the faster teams started at 9 am. While most would arrive in Lincoln around 7 pm, they had until 9 pm to finish.
The money raised by Trinity youth and their volunteers are going to their mission programs.
The Elmwood Park project also helped serve lunch in Murdock and also raised $500 for their project.
BUT,...the traffic crew was NOT from Murdock and I'm sure there are several clubs and organizations would would like to make an easy $500 in one day. With NO concessions, no purchasing of supplies. Just show up, wave a traffic flag and welcome them to Murdock.

Over 5,000 people came through the area and they might even come back to check out the Bulldogs Bar and Grill. Who knows, they might want to move to our area.

Halloween and Fall Decorations
Speaking of the runners meeting scarecrows while in town, I have to say WAHOO for the creative people who have decorated the streets and corners of Murdock.
I LOVE THE SCARECROWS!!!
Seriously! What fun it is to drive through town and see the decorations and creative ideas. A little bird told me Linda Glantz was involved some how, but I'm not sure.
I hope this trend continues on all the corners and houses, not just down the center of town.
I will be highlighting a Scarecrow every week as longer as they continue to grace Murdock. If I remember they were then replaced by Christmas trees. I can't wait!!!
Since this was homecoming week my first scarecrow is dressed in an Elmwood-Murdock shirt. I have the same one, but I don't keep frogs in my pocket.
Anyone want to claim this pumpkin man? I wonder if the frog will be replaced by something else next week. I'm going to keep checking.
If you replace, or add to the frog I will highlight the photo again next week.
Send me YOUR Photos
Fall is the time for Trick or Treaters and fun.
I remember riding my horse through town one Halloween dressed as the headless horseman and peaking her head up to the window of Bulldogs. (Don't ask how many years ago that was, but I believe I only had one child at the time.)
I loved taking my kids trick or treating in Murdock. Because we were a small town people didn't get many trick or treaters and were VERY generous with hand outs. Cans of pop, handfuls of candy, large candy bars. They cleaned up!
Likewise the effort that went into decorating. Spooky maniquins that moved, sound effects. It was so much fun!
Soooooo,...let's see your yard decorations, your jack o'lanterns, your costumes. Send them to me at
Here's one of my Jack O'Lanterns from last year. I have three sons in the United States Marines and I do love to carve pumpkins.

Please, listen to your heart. Pastor Ra needs help with taking Holy Communion to our members who are unable to come to church.
If you would be willing to ride along with her, (yes, she will gladly do the driving), you would be so helpful in assisting her with finding homes and farms, but more importantly, our members will know that the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is shared on behalf of our congregation, with you as a representative.
We have over 20 individuals who are unable to attend any worship service on a regular basis. Let God speak to you, as the Holy Spirit gives you the charisma (gifts) to share in this dynamic ministry. Plan now to sign up for the upcoming weeks.
If you will share with pastor what time and what day will work best for you, she will do what she can to work with your schedule. The requirements are that you love the Lord Jesus Christ, and are in good standing with our congregation.
Murdock Ebenezer United Methodist Church, a merger of 3 congregations, has loved and taught the love of God over 140 years.
Join us for worship on Sundays at 9:30 am.
We are a congregation of seekers and followers of Jesus Christ. We are young families, older families, empty nesters, and great singers and musicians.

High School Football Season
The Elmwood-Murdock Football team played their last home game of the season during Homecoming last Friday. They played a great game and the final score didn't really show the reality of a 0-10 game against Lincoln Lutheran who was 5-1 and ranked in the conference.
Here are the statistics for all of the games combined of the season for the sports statistics junkie in all of you. Thanks Julie Schmale for sending these on a weekly basis.

This year the annual craft show will be to benefit the Elmwood-Murdock packpack program.
The Backpack program is a statewide program that was started by the Food Bank in Lincoln.
The mission is to help alleviate child hunger in our community by providing hungry children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations.
