AUDITION NOTICE - LOFTE COMMUNITY THEATRE
Manley, NE [March 21, 2012] - The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley will be holding auditions on Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10 at 7pm for their 2012 season opener, "The Sunshine Boys."  The play is the story of two old entertainers, Al and Willie.  In the days of vaudeville, they were the top-billed comedy team, "Lewis and Clark."  Now they aren't even speaking. When CBS requests them for a "History of Comedy" retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs.  George Burns won his only Academy Award in the film version of this Neil Simon play.
The two primary roles called for men approximate ages 65-80.  Other roles in the play include 4 men and 2 women ages 18-60.  A complete description of the roles and the script can be found on the Lofte website,www.Lofte.com.
The audition will consist of cold readings from the script.  Rehearsals will begin in mid-April.  The show runs May 26, 27, June 1-3 and 7-10.  Please bring a list of schedule conflicts to the audition.

MONSANTO GRANT

Attention Area Farmers:  Elmwood-Murdock Schools have been nominated to apply for a grant

through a Monsanto Fund, called, “America’s Farmer Grow Rural Education”.  It is a locally focused

initiative to help strengthen math and science education in rural America.  The program allows

farmers to nominate a public school district to compete for grants of either $10,000 or $25,000.

At this time we are asking for your assistance in continuing the nominating process.  The

more nominations we receive the greater the chance we will have of receiving the grant.  You

may pick up forms at the following locations:  the local Co-ops, Corn Grower State Bank, the

American Exchange Bank, the convenience store at Elmwood, both the Elementary School in

Elmwood, and JR/SR High School in Murdock, and the Elmwood and Murdock Post Offices.

Nomination forms will be available on our school website at www.growruraleducationcom .

S.O.S. Minutes-March 15, 2012

Present (11): Bruce Friedrich, Karey Koehn, Teresa Hawks, Carrie Nunez, Melissa Wheeler, Susan Marlatt, Katy Drake, Erin Clymer, Amber Zakaras, Amy Rikli, Theresa Hansen

President Karey Koehn opened the meeting.  Minutes were reviewed and approved.

Treasure’s Report - Treasurer’s Report - Savings Account= $2,528.53 / Checking Account = $627.65 / Total Funds = $3,156.18

Agenda Items Discussed

SAC Science Fair funds requested – The SAC Science Fair will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2012.  A request for entry fee funds to send 24 students to the SAC Museum science fair was made.  Some funds came from concessions from the night of the science fair.  SOS was requested to make up the difference of $272.  Theresa Hansen and Katy Drake motioned and seconded with all approving funds.

AccuCut shape request–SOS had purchased an AccuCut machine a few years ago for use at the elementary school.  The Booster Club would like to use the machine and requesting a number of school / Knight themed shapes to be purchased.  Since they can be used by both the boosters and elementary, they would like to split the bill with SOS.  For the shapes selected, the total comes to $1,105, with SOS half being $552.50.  Erin reminded us that Cara Furgerson had been able to get a discount on items purchased if a certain amount of money was spent at one time.  Bruce will follow up with Cara on this.  Erin Clymer motioned to approve up to $600 or less for purchasing additional shapes for the AccuCut.  Susan Marlatt seconded and the group approved the motion.

Spring Carnival Date Reserved- Carnival has been scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2012.

Carnival items discussed:

·         Deb Lenz from 4th Street Market had asked to setup a table to sell flowers during the carnival with a percentage of the proceeds to go to SOS.  Discussion was held with the group and decided this will open up to others making similar requests in the future.  We do not want to go that direction for the carnival so we will not be able to honor this request.

·         Karey provided an updated list of prizes/donations we have received already.  The list was reviewed of who has not responded.  Members will try to contact some who we have not heard from yet to solicit donations.

·         We will be having the Cake/Cupcake Decorating contest again this year.  Carrie Nunez has agreed to coordinate it this year.

·         Packets will be going out 3 weeks prior to the carnival.  We will have a contest again for kids selling sheets of tickets.  Additional contest details will be provided on the raffle sheets.

·         Kindergarten Letter was reviewed

·         Food for carnival was discussed.

·         We have gotten volunteers to call for carnival workers.  They will begin calling about 3 weeks prior to the carnival.

·         We will be doing silent auction baskets Thursday, April 12th at 6:00 in the elementary cafeteria.

Athletic Banquet - The Athletic Banquet will be Friday, April 27th.  SOS has catered this event in the past and was requested to do this again.  This has always been a great activity this group has provided.  More discussion and coordination will be done at next month’s meeting.

Last Day of School–The last day of school is Tuesday, May 22nd.  SOS has provided lunch on the last day of school for the students for the last few years.  Bruce asked if we would consider doing it again and all agreed lunch would be provided for the students.

Miscellaneous.

·         Teresa Matthews has resigned her position as Art teacher.  She was provided a great opportunity and has decided to go with it.  Although it is disappointing, Bruce indicated after she came here and what has been accomplished, he knows how a truly good art program should be run.  They are beginning the process of interviewing for a new art teacher.  He indicated they are getting some good candidates.

·         Outdoor Event Trailer – Carrie Nunez had talked to us last month about the opportunity to get an Outdoor Event Trailer.  This is a turn-key ready trailer filled with 17 activities to host a 1-day event.  The goal is to engage Nebraska’s youth and families in nature and outdoor activities.  She was able to get the trailer reserved for Wednesday, May 2nd.  She will be looking for approximately 30-40 volunteers.  Bruce will contact the high school about volunteers, but was unsure if he could get that many volunteers.  If other parents/grandparents may be available to assist on this day, Carrie may have a spot for you.

·         Knight Stars – has provided some food for the carnival.  As a thank you, SOS agreed to donate $50 to Knightstars basketball.

Next Meeting—The next meeting was set for Thursday, April 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria.  The meeting time was moved up to allow us to work on Silent Auction baskets as well as the monthly meeting.  We encourage all parents to attend and to SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS!

Respectfully submitted,

Theresa Hansen
