Power football lifts Elmwood-Murdock against Lourdes CC
NEBRASKA CITY -- Elmwood-Murdock turned to power football in the second half Thursday, counting on two long drives to take control.
The Knights scored on a 10-play drive to start the third quarter, and on the their second possession of the second half, they marched 13 plays. That was enough for Elmwood-Murdock to hold on for a 19-14 victory over Lourdes Central Catholic at Pioneer Field.
"That first drive put us in control a bit. We knew if we scored on the first drive, we could control the clock a bit," said Elmwood-Murdock coach Leigh Schmale. "We didn't count on them coming back so quickly. You have to give Lourdes credit. They tested our secondary."
Jordan Steffen carried the ball seven of 10 times on the first drive of the second half for 36 yards and also had a 22-yard catch, capping the drive with a 4-yard run.
After the defense forced Lourdes to punt, Elmwood-Murdock started grinding again. This time, fullback Derick Vogt carried the ball for 30 of the 56 yards, including a 1-yard blast for a 19-7 lead with 10:03 left in the game.
Elmwood-Murdock ripped the ball out and Jacob Tiedeman pounced on it. But the Knights had to punt and Lourdes struck quickly. After an incompletion, Brett Sasse found Eric Francois at the Elmwood-Murdock 40, and he spun and raced in for a 61-yard score.
Lourdes got the ball back with 3:40 left in the game and Sasse connected with Blake Bequette for 27 yards, but Elmwood-Murdock sealed the win when Steffen intercepted a fourth-down pass.
"Brett made some nice plays and gave us a chance to win," Lourdes coach Andy Fedoris said.
Elmwood-Murdock rushed for 251 yards, with Steffen getting 126 and Vogt 109. Lourdes countered with 250 yards through the air, with Francois pulling down eight passes for 210 yards.
Elmwood-Murdock broke through at the end of the first half with a seven-play drive, all on the ground. Vogt scored on a 3-yard run to cap the drive with 57 seconds left in the first half.
But Lourdes responded, driving 71 yards in 45 seconds. Sasse found Francois near the 30-yard line and he made it to the 2. On the next play, Bequette bulled over the left side of the line to tie the game with 12 seconds left in the first half.

Rosetta Stroy had a booth at the Venice Flea Market near Waterloo. She had a little bit of everything. There were toys, dishes, jewelry, antiques....and more! We were able to find a lot of good buys at her booth. We thought it was funny that we had to drive all the way to Venice to barter with Rosetta! It was worth the trip. That is a fantastic flea market. We came home with both vehicles full.

Wait, we just got here and the wagon is already full!

These are some of the items that we came home with. Toys, toys, toys! The grandkids love us! Shay and Jordyn came over to try them out with Isabelle.

Christina and B try out the new wagon.

Vince wants to put a mower on the back.

Shay liked the race car but thinks there should be a motor on the back to help her get back up the hill.
