Elmwood Murdock Merchants Association Pancake Feed Bigger than Ever!

The EMMA Pancake Feed is an opportunity for the merchants to thank everyone for their loyal business.  The event is free and everyone is welcome.  The turnout this year exceeded last year with almost 400 people being served free pancakes, cooked up on a grill supplied by Mick Bornemeier of Mick's Diesel Repair, and sausages, generously supplied by the Elmwood Meat Plant.  At one point they ran out of sausages and had to substitute with hot dogs.  But then Deb Lenz saved the day and ran in with more sausages!  No one seemed to mind though.  The pancake batter came from Village Inn and made some yummy pancakes.

The Elmwood Murdock Merchants Association would like to thank everyone for their contributions and for volunteering.  A big thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy pancakes.  EMMA appreciates their customers and values their loyal business.

The drawing for the Easter hams produced two winners: Donny McHugh and Noah Tays.  The EMMA group looks forward to the opportunity to provide the free breakfast and say "Thank you" to their loyal customers.  Click here to check out the EMMA website for more information about the organization.

Taken from Rock Island Magazine, January, 1927

In the year 1890, the Rock Island railway was builded out of Omaha to the southwest, and in the same year was constructed to where the town of Murdock, in western Cass County now flourishes.  Murdock is located just seven miles from the crossing of the Platte river, and was the first town on the line except South Bend, and old town which lies along the banks of the Platte river.  The country around Murdock is a level plateau, and one of the richest sections of Cass county.  The first business man of Murdock was Louis Neitzel, who arrived the morning following the day in which the line of the road was completed to the site of the town.

Mr. Neitzel still lives and does business in Murdock and is one of the leading business men of the town.

When the line was completed as far as the present site of Murdock, a switch was laid and a short spur was constructed and the town was laid out on the farm of Louis Eickhoff who has been a resident since 1875.  When the question of providing a name for the town was taken up Mr. Eickhoff suggested it be called Neitzel in honor of the first business man.  This Mr. Neitzel did not quite agree to and suggested calling the town Eickhoff, and so the matter was discussed pro and con.

Mr. D. E. Thomason who has in hand the laying out of the town-site, suggested that the town be named for some officer of the Rock island railway, and it was finally decided to call it Murdock, one of the offers of the construction.

Following the opening of the first store by Mr. Neitzel came another, owned and operated by Hass Brothers.  Then came another by Frank martin of Omaha, and which now remains and is known as the Murdock Mercantile company.  Mr. Stephen Bornemeier of Ackley Iowa, was associated with this store, as was later Henry A. Tool, now with Henry A. Guthman who owns and operates the Bank of Murdock the first band established.  A few years ago another band was established known as the Farmers and Merchants bank, which is now owned by the farmers and merchants and conducted by J. E. Hendrix, and W. F Etmund.

Edward Evans was the first druggist, and Harry V. McDonald is conducting the same store.  Elmer E. Weiss was the first agent of the railroad, but many years ago forsook the railway and is engaged in the show business in Kansas City.

Murdock has an excellent citizenry and the surrounding community is of the very best and that is what makes this one of the best towns on the Rock Island.

Heritage Nebraska Seeking Hidden Treasures and Fading Places Nominations

Heritage Nebraska, a statewide not-for-profit citizens preservation organization, is seeking nominees for its 2011 List of Hidden Treasures and Fading Places.
“We have selected 20 Fading Places and 22 Hidden Treasures during the first two years of this project,” said Heritage Nebraska Executive Director J.L. Schmidt.
“The Hidden Treasures are those places that may not yet be on the radar, but they are places worth seeing and most of them provide things worth doing,” Schmidt said. “The Fading Places represent icons of our history that are threatened with extinction through demolition or neglect often brought on by lack of money and vision. “

The nomination forms are available on the organization Web site: www.heritagenebraska.org or can be obtained by calling the office at 402-323-7338 or e-mailing  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Since the first list was released in May 2009, the Fading Places have ranged from Camp Lookout in Sidney to the Industrial Arts Building on the proposed University of Nebraska-Lincoln Innovation Campus. We’ve also included the state’s 400-mile wide Interstate 80 sculpture garden, rural churches and schools and grain elevators and the Oregon Trail and archaeological sites statewide, Schmidt said. Preservation work has been started on at least seven of the 20 Fading Places projects to date.

The Hidden Treasures have ranged from the Chadron Hotel/Old Main Street Inn in Chadron to the Lester F. Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus and places in-between. Historic Downtown Fremont, Downtown Scribner and Historic Downtown Sidney have also joined the list of places worth seeing, Schmidt said.

“Nominations are due in our office on or before May 1,” Schmidt said. The winners will be announced at the next joint state conference of Heritage Nebraska Preservation and Heritage Nebraska Main Street in June.

Heritage Nebraska is a statewide not-for-profit citizen’s organization that advocates and promotes heritage in order to build stronger communities and maintain the essential character of Nebraska. The organization is affiliated with the Statewide and Local Partners of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Trust Main Street Center.

baby4

This is baby Roo.  She spent the weekend at our house and Millie took very good care of her.  Roo has sensors inside and is programmed to cry, coo, and burp at certain times.  Millie had to respond to each appropriately and document the event.  This is part of a parenting class that the seniors take.  The baby can be programmed for easy, medium, and hard. Little Roo was set on difficult.

baby3

Millie got a taste of what it is like to be a mom.  She even took Roo to work with her.  She was a fabulous mother!  But by the end of the weekend she was referring to Roo as "birth control".  At the end of the three days the baby can make a report that shows the teacher how good of care the baby received.  Millie got a 100%!  She was sad to turn Roo back in, she was having fun with her.  Maybe she will just have to borrow someone's baby once in awhile.
