Max Kathol is the Excecutive Director of the Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce. We used to work together so when I was in Plattsmouth I stopped in to see him. If you have any questions about the Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce Max is the person to call.
The Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization that advocates for all businesses and professional people in and around Plattsmouth.
The Chamber adds strength to our business-community image, assists with economic development, and is a liaison between the private and public sector. Plattsmouth is the county seat for Cass County. Even though we are on the west edge of Cass County don't forget about all the good things Plattsmouth has to offer. Click here to check out the Chamber of Commerce website for more ideas. I went there this week to license my car and was reminded that the main street is still torn up but progress is being made. It won't be long and it will be open again. I love the variety of shops on the main street. I'm planning a Saturday trip there to explore the shops and fun to be had in Plattsmouth.

The following historical tidbit was taken from Ed Bornemeier’s scrapbook of Murdock history from approximately 1920 until 1957. He cut out articles from the local papers and put them in a wallpaper sample book, plus he added his own comments. The Historical Society is considering publishing several copies, and want to know if the public would be willing to pay between $35-$40 for it. A copy is available for the public to look at in the Corn Growers State Bank in Murdock. Ed was Joel Bornemeier’s Grandpa.

August Kupke’s Barn Destroyed By Fire
Monday about noon the large barn on the August Kupke farm east of Murdock was set fire by lightening and completely destroyed. It was said to be one of the largest barns in Cass County and measured 100x60 feet. It was built in 1905 by Mr. Nelson, and the material was purchased at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904.
Fire departments from Murdock, Ashland, and Louisville were called but the blaze had gained too much headway and they were unable to cope with it. However, they were able to save several of the other out buildings from catching fire.
Burning with the barn were about 6000 bales of hay, wheat, oats, nine head of cattle, several pigs, a practically new Int. H tractor and other machinery, roofing, bathroom and kitchen equipment for modernizing their home, milking equipment and numerous other articles. Another small building was also said to have burned.
Mr. Kupke, in attempting to get the tractor out of the barn, was struck on the head by a falling timber, and it was necessary to call the doctor for him.
It is estimated that the loss will run into thousands of dollars with only a small part covered by insurance.
(Ed’s Comments): Many from Elmwood went to see the big fire. There were a lot of people there. I heard it was a $10,000 loss. Hardly any saved.
I helped haul 7 train carloads of lumber. It came from St. Louis World’s Fair of 1904. My last load was long timbers. Charley Eisenhut helped build it. 3 weeks to shingle it. 1 year to build it.

The Gladys Sunde house in Murdock suffered fire damage. A fundraiser was held at Bulldogs last week to benefit the family. Donations are still being accepted!

Folks, the Otoe County Genealogical Society will be hosting the 34th Annual Nebraska State Genealogical Society conference this year on May 6th – 7th at the Nebraska City First United Methodist Church. The conference usually brings in about 100-150 people from around the state, and we’re excited about hosting it this year, as it’s never been hosted in Otoe County in all those years. I know that the conference is two months away, but I was hoping to get the information posted early so the local people could start getting the word about it. If you can’t post it this early, I’ll totally understand, but if you can though, then that would be awesome! Here is the information for the conference:
“The Otoe County Genealogical Society will be the local host society for the 34th Annual Nebraska State Genealogical Society conference that will be held at the Nebraska City First United Methodist Church from May 6th through the 7th. Registration still open for Agri/Eco-Tourism Workshop
Workshop rescheduled for March 22-23
The 2011 Governor’s Agri/Eco-Tourism Workshop is rescheduled for March 22-23 at the Ramada Inn & Conference Center in Kearney.
The workshop, originally scheduled for the first week of February, was postponed due to hazardous weather and travel conditions. All of the original speakers will be presenting at the March workshop, including keynote speaker Stan Meador.
Meador—founder, owner and general manager of the X Bar Ranch Nature Retreat in Eldorado, Texas—will share 15 years worth of experiences with starting and running a tourism enterprise on his family’s fifth-generation ranch. This “nuts and bolts” presentation will help participants better understand why and how to diversify, how to manage various businesses operating on the same piece of land, and how to market a recreation product.
Previous registrants do not need to re-register. Those who now are unable to attend can contact Tom Tabor at This email address is being protected from spambots.
