The Murdock news gets read by many people around the country. Especially people who used to live here, or grew up in Murdock.

Janie Apodaca is one of them. She sent me the following photos and what she remembers about Murdock.

Knapps MurdockDairy Icecreamstore

After we lived in Murdock for a while, my parents opened up Knapp’s Café. This is the front of the Café. Not sure of the year, but the photo shows me, my brother John, and our dog Pickup.

Inside Knapp's Café in 1963. I can hardly read my mom's handwriting, but one is a Wendt, and the other one is Bob Litchenburger.

My best memories of the town when we lived there were the businesses on Main street.

We had 2 gas stations-one was Knop’s across the street from the old post office. We had Gus Wilken’s grocery store, Slieforts (misspelled) Hardware store, my grandparents garage (Knapp’s Garage), the library right next to the firehouse, the Corngrower’s State Bank, Murdoch’s Implements, Rhodes’s Grocery Store, Meisinger’s Hardware Store, Knapp’s Café, Norman’s Barber Shop, and the old Posts Office when Verl Bronkow was the postmaster.

This is my 2 brothers John and Jerry. John is pulling Jerry in a wagon from an old riding lawnmower my dad bought from the Murdock School. Not sure of the year, but my brother John who is driving is now almost 63 (next month.)

Thank you, Janie, for the stories and photos

GIVE BLOOD

Heavy snow and flooding over the past week have caused the cancellation of more than 600 blood donations and counting.

If you're eligible to give, please visit RedCrossBlood.org to find a blood drive near you. Local blood needs are met first, but because the Red Cross is a national network, we are able to send blood wherever it is needed across the U.S. In our time of need, we are also able to get blood from donors outside of Nebraska and Iowa.

VOLUNTEER
The American Red Cross focuses on the needs of those affected by the flooding. Volunteers are needed at shelters to provide a safe place to stay, a place to sleep, hot meals and referrals to partner agencies.

Anyone can make a difference by volunteering. We’ll find the position that appeals to you and allows you to use your skills and talents. Those interested in helping can sign up to volunteer at redcross.org. Volunteer Services will contact newly registered volunteers to identify opportunities for them to help.

The American Red Cross is focused on the immediate needs of those affected. If you would like to help with cleanup efforts or search and rescue, contact other disaster relief organizations in the community who assist with these areas of response and recovery. Learn more about what other organizations are doing by contacting the United Way at 2-1-1.

DONATE FINANCIALLY

Those interested in making a financial donation to support relief efforts can do so by visiting www.redcross.org/donate and selecting ‘I want to Support Disaster Relief.’ Donations can also be mailed to American Red Cross, 2912 S. 80th Ave., Omaha NE 68124. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small.

We appreciate the good intentions of those wanting to donate goods, supplies or other materials, but the best way to support is to make a financial donation. Financial donations allow the Red Cross to be flexible in using the funds to directly address the needs of those affected.

FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION

Download the Red Cross Emergency App for shelter information and to get instant access to information and resources on what to do during a flood. The app is free and can be downloaded in app stores by searching for “American Red Cross” or going to redcross.org/apps.

Also, follow us on Facebook (Facebook.com/NEIARedCross) and Twitter (@NEIARedCross) for up-to-date information.

Updates from the Legislature merged

Highway 63 UPDATE

The first phase of the project from I-80 to Church road was completed in 2017. This opened Church road east-west and connected it to I80.

Last year, 2018, was supposed to be culverts, grading and paving from South of Church road to Alvo.
The weather put the culvert work, grading work and utility relocation work behind schedule. By the time we had the subgrade stabilized and embankments constructed it was too cold to pave.

We will go to work on subgrade reconstruction and foundation placement once the frost is out of the ground and we get some drying weather.
Paving should go fast and we hope to be paved out by July.

I know it is frustrating but grading work is very susceptible to delays with wet weather and last year had a lot of rain.

It is with the hope that we can open in July.
Please encourage anyone interested to call the district office for updates.

402-471-0850.

Our project manager is Jesse DeLosSantos.
Our Construction Engineer is Curt Mueting.

NEST 529 Scholarship Contest Encourages
Children to Draw Their Dreams for the Future

Twelve Winners to Receive a $1,000 NEST 529 Account Contribution

Lincoln, Neb. (April 2, 2019) – Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante and First National Bank of Omaha today announced the ninth annual NEST 529 Draw Your Dreams Scholarship Contest, open nationwide to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The 12 winning entries, selected by the Nebraska Art Teachers Association, will each receive a $1,000 contribution to a NEST 529 College Savings account.

To enter the Draw Your Dreams contest, children are invited to submit a drawing of what they aspire to be when they grow up. The entries should be drawn on a 9- by 12-inch landscape using pencil, crayons, paint, watercolor or paper collage.

To qualify, the drawing must be one of the first 400 entries received between 12:00:00 a.m. CT on April 2, 2019, and 11:59:59 p.m. CT on May 14, 2019.

“The Draw Your Dreams Scholarship Contest encourages children to think creatively and proactively about their futures,” said Treasurer Murante. “Every child can achieve their higher education goals with hard work and the right preparation. With the help of NEST 529, Account Owners are able to prepare financially for the costs of college and make these dreams a reality.”

“For nearly a decade the Draw Your Dreams Contest has been an opportunity for NEST 529 to celebrate and empower young students and their families to pursue their educational aspirations,” said Deborah Goodkin, Managing Director, Savings Plans, First National Bank of Omaha. “We are delighted to provide these children with a boost to their NEST 529 accounts, and to spark important conversations about saving for college.”

Applicants can submit a copy of their drawing by mail or online at planartsnetwork.org. For scholarship contest rules, visit NEST529.com/scholarships. Contest rules also are available at treasurer.nebraska.gov/csp/scholarships.
