Inspiration

The Purpose of Christmas

Just one week before Christmas
Once prayers had been heard,
The people were scurrying
To get out God’s Word.

The hymns were being sung
To Holy God above,
In thanks for Him sending,
Jesus Christ and His love.

Christmas brings remembrance
Of family and friends,
And the importance of our sharing
A love without end.

Our blessings are too numerous,
Our hearts filled with joy,
Yet our eyes have often drifted
Away from our Lord!

The Christmas season brings forth
The best in most souls,
To help those less fortunate
And lighten their load.

Salvation was offered
For all to receive,
If only each person
Would listen, heed and believe.

So if you don’t know Him
Down deep in your heart,
Ask Him to save you now
You’ll be changed on the spot.

What’s Happening Around Our Community

“COMMUNITY APPRECIATION – GIVE TO THE LESS FORTUNATE NIGHT”
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2008
ELMWOOD-MURDOCK vs. MALCOLM BASKETBALL GAMES

In order to demonstrate our appreciation to the patrons of our district and to provide support to the less fortunate during these difficult economic times, the Elmwood-Murdock Public Schools will be holding a “Community Appreciation – Give To The Less Fortunate Night” at the Elmwood-Murdock vs. Malcolm boys and girls basketball games starting at 4:45 p.m. at Murdock on Friday, December 19, 2008.

Our goal is to collect food and/or money for the Elmwood Food Bank which is in need of food for the less fortunate. As a result, admission to the game will require each adult and student to bring two of the following food items; canned fruit, canned vegetables, soups, beans, cereal, paper products, and pasta (not Ramen Noodles). If you can not provide these food items, you can pay $2.00 per person which will go to the food bank to fund their purchase of food for the needy. We would encourage you to donate as many of the food items requested as you would like.

Additionally, a music scholarship has been started in the name of Tyler Eggert, Dillon Synovec and Angelica (A.J.Washington) who lost their lives in an October auto accident. We will be taking donations during the game to help support this scholarship. We would encourage you to make a donation to this scholarship.

FOOD DRIVE AND MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Our food drive for the local pantry is going well. We have collected approximately 225 items we still need about 525 items. If each building brings 750 of the requested food items for a total of 1500 we will dismiss early on December 23, 2008. Also, we are requesting that students bring money for a memorial music scholarship fund in memory of A.J., Tyler, and Dillon. Our goal is $500 total from both schools.
Food items that will count toward the total are: canned fruits, canned vegetables, cereal, rice, pasta, (no Ramen noodles) and paper products.

We will dismiss at 1:15 p.m. on December 23, 2008 if we reach these goals. Students may bring food items and money from December 1 through 9:00 a.m. on December 19. Please contact the school office if you have any questions.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM NEEDS PARENT/COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
Information was sent home last week regarding Junior Achievement’s Elementary School Program. The Elementary School Program teaches students in kindergarten through sixth grade, basic economic concepts through hands-on activities. The volunteers (who teach the lessons) are the key to the program’s impact in the classroom.

We are seeking parent/community volunteers that are willing to share their time, 30-50 minutes once a week for five visits, to enhance the student’ understanding of the local economy. In addition, the volunteers will inform the students how school relates to their future. The curriculum is offered free of charge to the school by Junior Achievement. We are planning on beginning the program in February. An instructional/informational meeting will be scheduled prior to beginning of the program for the volunteers. Please complete the form that was sent home in your child’s Friday Folder if you are interested in becoming a volunteer. Please contact, Principal, Bruce Friedrich, if you have questions or would like more information about the program.

MENTORS NEEDED FOR TEAMMATES PROGRAM
We are recruiting parents, patrons, and community members to be mentors for our TeamMates Mentoring Program. TeamMates ask that you make a commitment of meeting with your student for one hour a week in a school setting for a minimum of one year.

Mentors spend time talking and listening or focus on academics. Take some time to have a little fun like playing a game. Share a hobby. Work on a puzzle. Students in grades 3-12 are eligible to be in the program. Please contact Elementary Principal, Bruce Friedrich, and (994-2125) if you are interested in becoming a mentor or would like more information about the program.
