Inspiration

The very fact that a man is thankful implies someone to be thankful to.
--John Baillie
Psalm 100
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!
Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into God's presence with singing!
Know that the Lord is God! It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him, bless his name!
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation
(from the collection of Lincoln's papers in the Library of America series, Vol II, pp. 520-521).
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union. It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord.

Members of the Elmwood-Murdock Chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) traveled to Southern High School in Wymore, Nebraska, for the 2008 District 1 Leadership Conference, held October 24th. Approximately 225 members from 9 area schools attended the day long event.
Morning activities included a keynote address by the Governor’s Youth Advisory Council. This group is a body of young Nebraskans between the ages of 14 and 19 who are committed to being informed and taking a stand on the public issues that affect young people the most – education, finance, careers and employment, recreation, health, drug, and alcohol abuse, foster care, and more. They discussed ways members could become change agents in their communities. Additional session speakers included former Husker volleyball player, Dani Busboom; Ian Wenzel and Rebekkah Hammer, State FCCLA Officers; and Noah Hubbard, State Peer Education Team Member. Session topics included developing leadership, preparing STAR presentations, membership recruitment, planning for college, making smart financial decisions, and dealing with cancer’s effects as a family.
Members were also introduced to Amanda Gill, State Officer Candidate from Falls City chapter, and participated in an improvisation rock band competition. Students from Elmwood-Murdock split into break out sessions where they could listen to many different speakers. Also members Allison Bloch and Brooke Spiering presented their STAR project that received the Championship Ribbon last year at State Leadership Conference.
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. FCCLA has more than 220,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters from 50 state associations and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

FCCLA hosted American Red Cross Blood Drive last Tuesday.
The group took over the blood drive last year. FCCLA organizes, advertises, and volunteers at the drive to help make it a success. Their goal for number of donors was 36. Mrs. Vavak said, “The numbers were prey low this afternoon, but I don’t know if we met our goal.”
FCCLA members hosted the snack and drink table as well as checked in the volunteer blood donors. 31 people tried to give blood, with 27 being successful.

Military Orchestra Graces Lofte Stage

The Lofte Community Theatre is proud to be hosting its first orchestral concert. On Sunday, December 7th at 2pm, the 43rd Army Band from Lincoln will present a one-hour concert. The sixty-member orchestra will fill the entire Lofte stage. The concert will include patriotic selections, marches and emphasize holiday music. The concert is free and open to the public – no ticket is required for admission.
The 43rd's members are citizen soldiers who bring a wide variety of skills, talents and longevity to the unit. The members' various civilian jobs and experiences contribute a great deal to the overall success of the 43rd Army Band. This group meets one weekend a month and 15 days during the summer to rehearse and to fulfill military training requirements.
Officially, the band traces its history back to 1924 when it was created in Crete, Nebraska as the "Band Section, Service Company 110th Medical Regiment." The band went through several reorganizations and on March 3, 1948, the band was federally recognized as the 43rd Army Band. Over the years, they have not only won several music competitions, but also received many designations for overall excellence as well as trophies for Outstanding Company.
The Lofte has hosted other military groups in the past, one as recently as this November. However, when given the chance to host such an impressive group, the Lofte jumped at the chance. We welcome everyone in the surrounding communities to join us for our first Christmas Symphony. It's sure to be a memorable event for years to come.

Topping it off is the boys’ spirited montage, A Plaid Caribbean Christmas, which puts the “Day-O” in Excels is!
