Inspiration
Below is a wonderful poem Audrey Hepburn wrote when
asked to share her "beauty tips." It was read at her
funeral years later.
For attractive lips , speak words of kindness...
For lovely eyes , seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure , share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair , let a child run his/her fingers
through it once a day.
For poise , walk with the knowledge that you never
walk alone...
People, even more than things, have to be restored,
renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw
out anyone.
Coaches Comments: What a game! Kevin Zoz kicked a 24
yard Field Goal with 2:40 left in the game and the
Knights were able to hold on and defeat Howells, the
#1 team in the state 3-0. This was a very satisfying
win for our program. It was the first time that we
were matched up against the #1 team and our players
really responded to the challenge. We told them all
week if they wanted to be remembered for something for
a long time, a victory over Howells on their home
field would accomplish that. The game was a close
battle to the end. Howells missed a 25 yard field goal
in the 1st quarter and we had a 41 yard field goal
blocked and failed on a fake field goal attempt in the
4th quarter. The Knights had good field position for
most of the 4th quarter. We had three different
opportunities to score. I’m just glad that we were
able to convert on one of them. Give Howells a lot of
credit. They are a great defensive team. The toughest
defense we have ever played against. We got 10 first
downs to their 9, but none of it came easy. They held
us well below our season average on offense and I
believe their 179 total yards was well below their
season average. Our defense bent at times but did not
break. A goal line stand right before the end of the
1st Half was huge and gave us momentum going into
halftime. Statistically, we outplayed them in the
second half running 25 plays to their 10. We had 75
rushing yards to their 24 in the 2nd half. Jon
Luetchens had 2 interceptions in the game, the last
one with 1:50 seconds left in the game. We needed a
key 1st down to run the clock out. On 3rd and 6 David
Davis was able to get outside on a sweep gaining 10
yards and staying in bounds. From there the Knights
took a knee three times and the celebration was on.
Howells Highlights: 1st Quarter No Scoring, 2nd
No Scoring., 3rd No Scoring. ,4th (E-M): Kevin
Zoz kicked a 24 yard FG with 2:40 left in the game.

Tammy Brummer gets in the spirit of supporting the
Knights by creating and hanging banners around the
field.

The stands filled up quickly with Elmwood-Murdock
fans to support the Knights. Terry Carlton positioned
himself in his regular spot standing at the top of the
bleachers to view the game.

Injured Trent Shrader cheers on his team from the
sidelines. Shrader, a senior, broke his foot during
the Weeping Water game, but that didn’t stop him from
being a very important part of this team.

The Elmwood-Murdock Knights huddle on the Howells
field after the VICTORY to listen to Coach Schmale’s
comments. Stunned and devastated Howells also takes a
knee to listen to their coach.

Knightstars summary vs.North Bend
The Elmwood-Murdock 8th grade Twin River League team
traveled to North Bend on November 4 to play a very
good team. North Bend was able to jump to a big lead
in the first quarter by a score of 15-2. The second
quarter we were able to get the ball inside to our
post players and outscored them 8-6. The second half
we played better by being more aggressive. We shot the
ball better in the second half and also did a nice job
of driving the ball to the basket. North Bend had some
tall, athletic players that caused us problems with
rebounds. I was happy that we did adjust after the
first quarter to being more aggressive.

“I lived just west of Murdock 50 years ago. I
graduated from Murdock in 1958. The annex to the grain
elevator was built in 1958. I worked on it while it
was being constructed. Younglove Construction Company
of Sioux City, Iowa was the general contractor. Bill
Heier was my bus driver. There was ten in my
graduating class that year. here was 42, I believe, in
HS that year. I knew Reuben, but knew his younger
brother, Melvin better. Melvin graduated in 1957. I am
now a self-employed CPA practicing and living in
Lafayette, In. Lafayette is straight east of Murdock,
about 600 miles. O.A.LINDELL, CPA”
