Junior High Volleyball Team Under New Management

Coach Dean checks stances as Andrea Kitrell, Shannon Ronhovde, Brandy Kitrell, Shannon Melo, Sidney Brummer, Taren Stander, Erin Dwyer, Cheyenne Smith, and Brianne Ross follow the instruction of Coach Vavak.
Coach Vavak and Coach Dean took over the Junior High volleyball team this year from previous Coaches Bell and Carae Oehlerking.

Coach Vavak and Coach Dean requested a parents meeting to assist on at home volleyball practice between parents and their athlete(s). The meeting was very informative on correct and incorrect volleyball form.

Lindsay Oehlerking assists in demonstrating a setting drill that will help improve proper form and position of hands as the ball approaches the athlete. With lots of practice, the move will become second nature to the player and they won’t even need to think about it.
Coach instructed, “Have them sit down with their legs crossed. Thumbs need to be at their eye brows with their fingers curved to make a home for the ball. Their elbows need to be up when you’re tossing the ball to them. Throw it into their hands and make them catch it-all 10 fingers on the ball. Do not allow them to move their hands forward to meet the ball. It’ll come to them.”

“Bottom of the thumb is where the ball will be pushed from and the fingers go up. When there’s no sound to their set, that’s when their setting it.” Said Coach as Lindsay demonstrated.

Coach showed the proper stance for a passer with the help of Shannon Ronhovde.

Shannon illustrated the correct form of how to pass the ball. Vavak said, “Don’t ever let them cross their feet or bend their elbows-that’s not allowed. Four inches above the wrist is where they make contact. That’s where the red marks should be.”

The six week season is underway! See you at the game!

Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.
It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.
It has come to be recognized in the U.S. not only as a celebration of the working class, but even more so as the unofficial end of the summer season. In the northern half of the U.S. at least, the summer vacation season begins with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.
State parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season.

Volunteers Needed:
Elmwood-Murdock Great Bike Race – September 8th.
The Cass County Visitors Promotion Committee will be assisting with the promoting of the race again this year, but a large number of volunteers are needed to help with the race the day of activities. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Judy Cline, president of the Elmwood Murdock Merchants’ Association (EMMA).

This message is to let all parents of students in grades 6-8 at EM know about a middle school event called "Fear Fest" coming up on Saturday September 8th. This is a "Fear Factor (TM)" style competition that is lots of fun to do, and to watch. The funds raised by this and the concession stand are used for middle school activities. We need 20 parent volunteers to do the games and concessions on this day. If you can help please call Marie at 867-2002, or respond to this email. We also need 3 team organizers to work with us in the next few weeks to organize the competition. Please give us your skill, time and enthusiasm to make this another great event.

Registration forms for Fear Fest will be available at school or by emailing us.
"Fear Fest" is being held for the 3rd year in conjunction with "ElMur Fest" (formerly called the "Elmwood Murdock Great Bike Race") which is in its 4th year. Complete information about "ElMur Fest" and all the community events taking place is coming with the Merchant's newsletter in your mailbox, and at www.elmwoodnebraska.com and murdocknebraska.com.

Please do call us to sign up for a few hours of volunteer time on the 8th.
Thank you! Marie Gregoire
