Inspiration
This one was sent by Angie Fries:
Each and everyone one of us may be going through tough times
right now, but God is getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can. Keep
the faith.
This prayer is powerful, and prayer is one of the best gifts we receive. There
is no cost but a lot of rewards. Let's continue to pray for one another.
The prayer:
Father, I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and those that I care deeply
for, who are reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of Your love and
power. Holy Spirit, I ask You to minister to their spirit at this very moment.
Where there is pain, give them Your peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubt,
release a renewed confidence through Your grace. Where there is need, I ask you
to fulfill their needs. Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and
their comings. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.
Support the
Elmwood-Murdock Football Team by purchasing a “Knights Gold Card”
The Elmwood-Murdock Knights Football
Team has already begun their season with football camp last week and two-a-days
this week. They’re working hard
to be prepared for their first game (Soap Scrimmage) that will be held August 17
at Elmwood.
With the beginning of the season at
hand also comes cost, so the team is raising money to help defray some of the
expense by selling “Knights Gold Cards”.
The cost of the discount card is $15.00 and can be purchased from any
football player. You may contact
Mr. Schmale if you have any questions at 867-2341.

Two fund raisers
sponsored by American Legion Post 247 are planned to help support the
Elmwood G.A.R. Hall
Military Museum:
The first is the third annual Ice Cream
Social which will be held at the G.A.R. Hall on Sunday evening, August 19th from
6:30 - 8:00 p.m. There is no program planned for the evening, just an
opportunity to enjoy ice cream and desserts, socialize, and view the museum.
The second event is a golf tournament
(hopefully “first annual”) at Grandpa’s Woods, on Sunday afternoon,
September 23rd starting with a 3 p.m. shotgun start. We will conclude the
evening after 9 holes of tournament play with hamburgers, hotdogs, brats,
salads, and desserts. Call Grandpa’s Woods at 994-2100 or Bonnie Brewer at
994-5315 to register.
A little background on the G.A.R. Hall - Our
American Legion Post 247 (Elmwood-Murdock) had a two-fold dream of preserving
the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Hall and creating a museum to help
preserve the rich military history of our area. The hall is a reminder to us and
to our children of the presence of Civil War veterans in Elmwood and the role
they played in the growth of this community after the war. Since many of the
pioneers in this area were Civil War veterans, a G.A.R. Post was established
here and the hall built in 1886. At one time there were over 100 G.A.R. Halls
across Nebraska; now there are only four, Elmwood, Falls City, Grand Island and
Nebraska City. That fact alone makes the preservation of this building important
historically. The G.A.R. offered membership to all military personnel who served
in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. The purpose was to provide camaraderie for
the veterans and support for the widows and orphans of the Union soldiers.
The G.A.R. Hall is now the home of our Legion
Post and Auxiliary and the Elmwood G.A.R. Hall Military Museum. As it became
obvious that there was a wealth of military history in this area and a need to
preserve that history, the G.A.R. Hall seemed the logical place to preserve our
heritage. Teaming together with the FBLA students at the high school, the first
part of the dream was fulfilled as the Hall was renovated and made ready to
serve as a museum.
The second part of the dream is an on-going
project. Display cases seemed to be the largest obstacle to overcome, but they
have been acquired and are in place awaiting display items. Mannequins have
arrived for uniform displays, and service flags are ready to be flown.
Several new display items from the Civil War,
World War I, and World War II were recently donated. Display items are accepted
on either a permanent or temporary basis and the goal is to fill all the display
cases. If you know of anyone who has military or local history items they would like to have displayed,
please have them contact Bonnie Brewer at 994-5315.
As with all
endeavors, creating and maintaining a museum or any building requires financial
support. We hope many of you, your family, or friends will be able to play in
the tournament or attend the ice cream social. If you are not a golfer but would
still like to participate in that event, please join us for the meal to be
served shortly after 5 p.m. on September 23rd.
Stop by the G.A.R.
Hall on Sunday evenings this summer (through Labor Day) from 6:30 - 8:30 - you
might be pleasantly surprised at what you will find!
