PLEASE RESPOND: Send me you
harvesting/canning/freezing tips!
I’d
like to do a write up about special tips Murdock community members use during
their garden harvest. Whether it be
vegetable or fruit tips, I’d like to hear about them. Or, if you have a FAVORITE recipe you use, please send it!
I know Mary Fritz has an AWESOME home made tomato soup recipe.
If you have tips from ‘how to keep the weeds out’ to ‘how to pick a
watermelon’, please pass them on to me so the wealth of wisdom can be shared
with our fellow Murdockians.
Fair
entry photo and information also still needed. Please send me an
email or give me a call with your 4-H or fair entries.
Murdock would LOVE to have a sneak preview!

Alli Kuhlman and Megan Scholting played softball for the Omaha Quakes 16U Red team out of Omaha this summer. Last week they were in Minnesota to compete for the National trophy. They are coached by Les Johnson.
I spoke with Coach Johnson who gave me a few details about the team, their season, and the victory in Minnesota.
Coach Johnson said, “the girls are a 16 and under team, but most of the girls are 15. We played up a lot for better competition and played girls as old as 18 a lot of the time.”
The first game played at Nationals was against Harding Place. An unfortunate event occurred during that game. One play took out the team’s catcher as she broke her leg sliding into third base. The girls managed to pull together and still won the game with a score of 10-0.
That put the team with only nine players for the rest of the tournament. The team won the second game against Hasting Minnesota after being tied 1-1 in the last inning. The Quakes won the tie breaker which put them in the bracket where the best teams play-The Gold Bracket.
Megan hit the winning run in against the Iowa Hustle for a victory of 2-1.
During the fourth game against St. Paul Veterans, Coach said, “Megan had some nice catches at first base and two good hits.” This contributed to the victory of 5-1.
The Coach gave detail of the fifth game played against Maplewood, “We were down 4-0. They (Maplewood) started to stall so the time would run out and they wouldn’t have to play the last inning. We had bases loaded when the center fielder got a base hit scoring one with bases still loaded. So we were down 4-1. Then the right fielder hit a triple to clear the bases and put her on third. Next, the pitcher was up and hit the ball to the fence scoring the third base runner and winning the game 5-1.
The next day Megan came back big. The score was 0-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The pitcher got a base hit, and then Alli Kuhlman came in as a pinch runner and was bunted to second base. Alli attempted a steal to third but was run back to second base, but only after the batter was safe at first. This put runners on first and second. A passed ball advanced them to second and third. Megan was now up to bat. According to Coach Johnson, “Megan RIPPED one right up the middle for a double.” Megan then ended up scoring giving them a win of 3-0.
Coach commented that, “Megan was a big par of why we won and Alli was very much a team player.” The team never lost a game in pool play or in the tournament. They went 6-0. For more information, you may visit the Quakes website at www.quakessoftball.com
Congratulations to Megan and Alli and the Quakes Softball Team for winning the AFA Northern Nationals Gold Division!
