ALL STARS!
The annual All Stars award ceremony was held last Monday at the elementary school gym. Sixth grade students have been learning how to choose their destination instead of it just happening to them. Mrs. Robin Kuhlman coached them along the way. They students discussed what kind of future they want for themselves and what kind of character and qualities they would need in order to achieve their goal.
Mrs. Kuhlman said, “We all know that it can take a very long time of doing the right thing… being involved in the community, working hard, to build a good reputation. But just ONE wrong thing and all that effort to have a good reputation can be ruined.” They also learned that they can obtain the reputation of “who they hang out with” even if they aren’t participating in the activities with them.
The class discussed what drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and other substance abuse can do for their future. They learned that it can destroy it or even kill you so they all thought it would be “STUPID!” to do that and thought they’d stay clear of substance abuse.
Parents were involved with the learning as they sat down to do homework their child brought home. Students discussed possible futures with their parents & what it would take to achieve that goal. Parents were asked to participate by discussing their feelings about those choices with their child.

Jennifer Hromanik receives a certificate and star award from Mrs. Kuhlman and Ms. Seelhoff for completing the All Stars program. Each student was given an award and an acrylic star at the conclusion of the ceremony. Cookies and drinks were provided by the SOS group.

The Sixth grade All Stars Graduates!
Second grade school teacher, Mrs. Glantz, reported the Elmwood-Murdock Second Grades made May baskets to deliver to the senior citizens at the Elmwood Community Center on May 1st. Following the surprise, they walked to the park to eat their sack lunches and have a play time for recess. The last activity was to walk to the library where April Andersen read a story to the class then gave them a tour of the library and finished with another story. Everyone was invited to return for the summer library program which will begin after July 4th. Back at school, Grade 2A delivered May baskets to our school helpers.

falls on the second Sunday in May
and is a celebration of Motherhood.
Mother's Day is a day set aside to express love, respect and thanks
to
Mothers.
The day is observed by
giving gifts, visiting, or taking Mothers out for dinner and celebration.
In recent years, a day has been designated to honor Grandmothers on Grandparents Day,
usually the second Sunday in September.
Julia Ward Howe first suggested the observance of a Mother's Day in 1872. The day was dedicated to peace. She held an annual meeting, for several years in the city of Boston, Massachusetts for this observance.

In 1887, Mary Towles Sasseen, a Kentucky school teacher, began conducting Mother's Day celebrations and in 1904, Frank E. Hering of South Bend, Indiana began a campaign for the observance of Mother's Day.
However, it wasn't until Anna Jarvis, of West Virginia, began a nationwide campaign for its observance that the idea took root. On May 10, 1908 churches in Grafton, West Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania held Mother's Day celebrations.

At the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1912 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a resolution was made that Anna Jarvis be recognized as the founder of Mother's Day and that it be observed on the second Sunday in May.

Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending observance of Mother's Day by executive branches of the government on May 9, 1914.

The following year, Mother's Day
was designated an annual national observance.

Poetry
Mother's Day means sending cards and gifts to moms and wives for all the warmth and love they give all year. The words to tell a mom how special she can be hard to find. Read some of the poems and quotes that you'll find here for inspiration and if you still can't think of a better way to express just how wonderful she is, you can always borrow one of these...
Because I feel that in the heavens above
The angels, whispering one to another,
Can find among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother"...
Edgar Allen Poe
God's Masterpiece Is Mother
God took the fragrance of a flower...
The majesty of a tree...
The gentleness of morning dew...
The calm of a quiet sea...
The beauty of the twilight hour...
The soul of a starry night...
The laughter of a rippling brook...
The grace of a bird in flight...
Then God fashioned from these things
A creation like no other,
And when his masterpiece was through
He called it simply - Mother.
- Herbert Farnham
She Shall be Praised
Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.
Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth no the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
- Proverbs 31: 10, 25-31
